Sour Flour Beginner’s Baker Kit

$50 at Sour Flour

This is something near and dear to me. With all the free time I had [funemployment!], I started learning to bake bread. I connected with Danny Gabriner via Twitter, and he taught me a thing or two about baking from sour dough starter!

He’s put together these beginner baker kits, which I think are absolutely awesome. You too can learn to bake bread. It’s not as hard as it sounds, but does require a bit more math than I like. Make sure you use a scale and a calculator to get those hydration percentages!

The Sour Flour Beginner Baker’s Kit includes:
- 1 Blarf Baby (the starter that will be the basis for all of your breads)
- 5kg Flour
- 100g Salt
- 100g Cornmeal
- 1 Mixing Bowl
- 2 Proofing Bowls
- 2 Starter Containers
- 10 Ingredient Containers
- 2 Muslin Bowl Cloths
- 1 Canvas Couche
- 2 Half Sheet Pans
- 1 Bench Scraper
- 1 Bowl Scraper
- Full Instructions

If all you need is a Blarf Baby, Danny will send you one for free!

robot-cookie< $20 at Williams-Sonoma

In response to my last posting, JeskaD sent me an awesome find. Yes, it’s also on the pricey side of things, but if you’re going to search locally for that robot cookie cutter, this seems to be the next best thing online.

Each is approximately 2.5″ wide and 5.5″ high. The four sides of each robot cutter are divided into rotating top, middle and bottom sections. It’s a mix-and-match cookie cutter. You just twist and go!

3D Robot Cookie Cutter

robot_cookie_cutter< $5 at KitchenAria

Technically it ends up being a $20 cookie cutter after shipping from the UK, so it’s not the deal I had anticipated.

It saddens me, really. Still, a cute find is a cute find.

If you happen to be in the area where shipping is a LOT LESS, then it might be worth looking at. It’s actually 2.50 pounds. Some day, I’d love to add a robot to my cookie cutter collection.

Love cephalopods? My friends do! It must be the giant heads and tentacles!

Squids, cuttlefish, octopi – you name it. I think this cup MIGHT just be the perfect gift for them.

CAKE, a design house based in Brooklyn, brings us this ceramic cup with a bas relief of an octopus wrapped around. Holding about 15 ounces of liquid, it is available in black with white octopus and white with black octopus [pictured here].

This awesome set of four robot plates from French Bull caught my eye pretty much right away.

I have a thing for robots, that’s for sure!

A different robot on a different background, these 8″ square melamine plates are heat resistant, but not quite microwave-safe.

Alessi Cico Egg Cup$18 at Scandinavian Details

If you’re the type who needs to enhance your egg-eating experience, the Cico Egg Cup from designer Stefano Giovannoni is perfect! It’s ridiculously cute, and it’s a 3-in-1: His head is an egg holder. His hat is a salt shaker, and he holds your egg-consuming tool – a spoon. It comes in different colors, in case blue just doesn’t do it for you.
